Cabin Stillness
A Winter Cabin in Dialogue with Forest and Climate
Architecturally, the cabin embodies traditional North American log construction, where massive horizontal timber logs form both structure and enclosure. The exposed wood grain, deep natural tones, and visible joinery express material honesty and craftsmanship. Wide roof overhangs shield entrances and glazing from heavy snowfall, while elevated decks and balconies extend the living space outward, strengthening the relationship between shelter and landscape.
Inside, the architecture becomes more intimate. Double height glazing introduces soft winter daylight, counterbalancing the density of timber walls. Sloped ceilings follow the roofline, creating spatial volume without sacrificing warmth. The repetition of logs functions as both structural system and interior finish, producing a tactile environment where texture replaces ornament and material becomes the primary design language.
Nature remains inseparable from the architecture. Snow gathers along railings and steps, illustrating seasonal patterns and reinforcing climate responsiveness. Bare trees open long sightlines through the forest, allowing filtered light to reach the interior. The restrained winter palette of whites, greys, and deep greens contrasts with the warmth of stained timber, intensifying the sense of refuge.
