The Gil

Concept Café and Dining – Biomimetic Design Study

Client: Confidential
Project Type: Conceptual Café and Dining Design
Location: Dakak Park and Beach Resort, Barangay Taguilon, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines
Date: August 18, 2022

The Concept Café and Dining project is a design exploration inspired by the organic form of a fish. The architectural composition interprets the terrace as the “mouth,” while a pivotal operable façade element known as the “Gill” defines the building’s environmental strategy. The overall massing suggests a structure partially emerging from water, translating natural movement and fluidity into architectural geometry.

The “Gill” functions as both environmental device and visual identity. Designed as a series of operable panels, it promotes natural ventilation and enhances interior comfort. When opened, the façade allows airflow and strengthens the connection between interior and exterior spaces. When closed, translucent surfaces filter daylight, casting layered light patterns throughout the dining area. This dual functionality merges passive design principles with sculptural expression.

The “Fin” accommodates the café program, including kitchen, dining counter, seating area, and washroom. Designed for operational flexibility, this space can function independently during lower occupancy periods. A connecting bridge links the Fin to the Gill dining terrace, creating a fluid circulation path that enhances the guest experience and reinforces the narrative of movement embedded within the concept.

Design Themes

  • Biomimetic form inspired by aquatic movement
  • Operable façade system promoting natural ventilation
  • Terrace integration as primary spatial gesture
  • Programmatic zoning with independent operational flexibility

The result is a conceptual dining environment where form, environmental strategy, and narrative coexist, transforming a natural metaphor into an immersive architectural experience.
